Warren Bath – MSc Student 2014-2015

My undergraduate dissertation (Investigation into Polymer Modelling using Finite Element Analysis, sponsored by SBM Offshore) led me to seek a master’s degree related to the integrity of components located in harsh environments. The Structural Integrity MSc with NSRIC consisted of modules that covered all my areas of interest. These modules gave me a great understanding of structural integrity as a whole across all disciplines of mechanical engineering. For my masters’ thesis, I continued research using finite element analysis and selected the topic: Determining the commonality between pressure vessels for fatigue reassessment.

Upon completion of the MSc I started working within TWI’s Integrity Management Group as an Innovation Project Leader. My role entails overseeing all of the group’s innovative solutions/techniques and finding suitable applications and markets for their deployment. This requires a detailed understanding of the different types of; non-destructive testing techniques, condition monitoring and structural health monitoring solutions, fatigue testing, risk based inspection software and our internal numerical modelling capabilities. My role is predominately client facing so it is important that I have a solid understanding of these technologies. I was fortunate that my masters’ covered all of these topics individually and it is a tribute to the industrial relevance of the course. The maters’ degree contributed greatly to the reason I was selected for this role. Having the course accredited by the IMechE also allows me to become charted at a later date. I would highly recommended this degree if you wish to become a Structural Integrity Engineer or work in this field.

Andreea Crintea

Andreea Crintea – MSc Student 2014-15

I graduated from the MSc in Structural Integrity in 2015, after which I started working as a Project Leader at TWI, in the Asset and Fracture Integrity Management department.

For my dissertation, I carried out a feasibility study for using an optimised Single Edge Notch Tension specimen required for fracture toughness testing at extreme temperatures in a thermally controlled chamber. The experience gained while working on my dissertation project, along with the knowledge I accumulated during the taught modules on metallurgy, non-destructive testing and engineering critical assessments of flawed structures gave me the confidence to pursue a career as a Structural Integrity Engineer.

In my current role at TWI, I am involved not only in core research projects, but I also manage and deliver commercial consultancy projects regarding the performance of materials in severe environments, as well as the assessment of welded structures for the oil & gas, power and aerospace industry.
